Fight Club(1999)-"The effect of capitalism on an individual"
"Maybe self-improvement isn't the answer.Maybe the answer is self-destruction"
Since the beginning of the 20th century, our civilization has been revolutionized by technology.Innumerable breakthroughs in terms of mechanization and human health has been achieved.A new vivid approach towards life has crept into our civilization. A new temperament has developed in the western society. The definition of "Capitalism" slowly and gradually has grasped the westerns.
What is "Capitalism"?
Well in simplest way,it is a way of society in which an individual decides and manages his own worth.Sounds fair enough ,right? But sadly , nature and evolution is unjust. It distributes(often) the gifted ones in privileged background and mediocre ones in destitution. And even worst is the human psychology. No matter how much blunt we may be inherently,we always want that "Aston Martin" that our gifted and privileged neighbour has. We are ready to part with "happiness" and compromise our health in order to achieve it.
"We all have been raised on television to believe that one day we'll be millionaires, and movie-gods , and rock-stars, BUT WE WON'T. SLOWLY WE ARE LEARNING THAT FACT . AND WE ARE VERY VERY PISSED OFF"
These words form Tyler Durden describes perfectly a mediocre man's futile attempts to rise to FAME AND GLORY.
PLOT:
Our protagonist is an insomniac ,white-collared employee of an esteemed automobile corporation.Rendered numb in the course of buying a "perfect lifestyle",he decided to trade off his IKEA furnishings for a rather UNPREDICTABLE and ADVENTUROUS life. Collaborating with Tyler Durden , he starts an underground fight club in a pub's basement.
"Without pain, Without sacrifice, We'll have nothing"
"We are God's unwanted children.SO BE IT."
This scene throws some deep insight into what Tyler's philosophy of life is.Whether or not he believes in Jesus is a debatable issue, but one conclusion can be drawn for sure. And that is:"He doesn't want to live at the mercy of others, whether it be GOD or any other being".He accepts and embraces HOPELESSNESS and in order to survive the ravages, he practices to endure pain and suffering at an extreme level.
Tyler continues to metastasize his ideas upon others. He moves out of the basement and starts another project, aiming to destroy CORPORATE artifacts and buildings..His purpose here seems whimsical and mysterious. Maybe he was trying to destroy the hoax of "rationalization" and "ecstasy" within an individual living under a capitalist organisation.
Tyler leads us to believe that the consumption of fancy items from big corporations has been forcibly rammed down our throat and now the society is choking on it.
At the end of our movie, we are stupefied to discover that Tyler was just a fictional character designed by our protagonist in order to gather the courage to move out of his frustrating cage.
And last but not the least, excuse me for breaking the FIRST RULE OF FIGHT CLUB
